ABOUT
Danielle Liberman
(b. 1996, Holon, IL)
“In my work, I photograph, print, slice, and fold together the personal, matrilineal, and collective gaze as reflected in the camera’s mirror. I often work with myself as the subject, in the form of self-portraiture, out of careful consideration and sensitivity to the power of the photographic view. Through self-portraiture and the manipulation of domestic spaces, I engage with memory, trace, and the overlooked artifacts of everyday life. The home becomes both a site of performativity and a catalyst for image-making, where meaning emerges through mundane materials and everyday interventions.
My process isolates moments of potentiality—where time feels suspended, and the viewer is invited to interpret what has just occurred or what is about to unfold. Expanding the medium of photography, I experiment with formats, materials, and modes of presentation, challenging conventional boundaries between image and object.
Through multilayered installations, I highlight the inconspicuous—the unnoticed artifacts and fleeting gestures that shape our environments and relationships. By shifting focus to what typically eludes attention, my work interrogates ideas of permeability and demarcation, naturalness and artificiality, and the tensions between private and public space.”
In 2023, Liberman founded Let’s Talk Art Now, a digital platform for conversations with artists.
